From 1996 until 2004 I produced and hosted a weekly segment on the KSL travel show in Salt Lake City called the One Tank Trip of the Week. The segment featured popular destinations and out of the way places that local travelers could easily visit within a half-day drive of home. Places like Jackson Hole, Moab, St. George, Sun Valley, West Yellowstone, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park and many others were frequently talked about. To make the segment more interesting I would often invite a local tourism expert to be on air with me to share little known nuggets of information and folklore that generally aren’t mentioned in brochures and websites – Butch Cassidy tales were a popular topic! These guests became a good source of material I used in entertaining bus groups I guided through the national parks of the west.
Places to go, things to do and sights to see within a half-day drive of home has been the ongoing theme of DriveAway Vacations. Add the hype of this summer’s buzz on Daycationing and Staycationing, road trips have never been so popular. Even in spite of the high gas prices – which are currently dropping, at least for now – road trips are still one of the most economical and exciting ways to travel and see the country. Utah and its neighboring states are a road trippers paradise. Salt Lake City is a literal epicenter of places to visit in the Intermountain region. As far as things to do and sights to see, the list is lengthy – point yourself in any direction and go, it won’t take long to get there usually less than half-day drive away. Here’s a One Tank Trip to consider taking this winter.
